Anatomy of a question

Every question in LabAn is built the same way, so you always know where to look.

Exploded drawing of a LabAn practice question screen. Its six numbered parts are listed next to the drawing. 56 4 3 2 1
Drawn from the app design. Parts lifted apart to show the layers.
  1. Subject and question number. The tab shows the subject's icon and where you are, like Clinical Chemistry, 7 of 10.
  2. Number row and flag. Jump between questions, and flag one you want to see again.
  3. The question. Original, and checked against a textbook or law by a Registered Medical Technologist.
  4. Four choices. Your answer is marked, and if it was wrong, the right one is marked too, with an icon and a word, not colour alone.
  5. Why. A short explanation of the right answer, and of the tempting wrong one.
  6. Source. Every question names the textbook or law it was checked against.

Study the way the exam asks

Short sessions, clear answers, and tools you would otherwise look up in a book.

Practice questions that explain themselves

Every question has an explanation and a source (a textbook or the law), so you learn why an answer is right, not just which letter to pick.

  • Original questions, each checked against a textbook or law by a Registered Medical Technologist
  • Adaptive practice starts easy and gets harder as you improve, or switch to random
  • Pick the topics you want to study

A man has severe epigastric pain that spreads to his back. Which serum enzyme is most specific for acute pancreatitis?
ATotal amylaseYour answer

DGamma-glutamyl transferase
Why

Lipase rises within 8 hours and stays high for up to 2 weeks. Amylase is less specific: salivary glands make it too.

Mock exams that follow the board

Sit the six subjects as separate timed papers, in board order, or take one subject on its own. Blank answers count as wrong, like the real thing.

Study notes and mnemonics

Notes are sorted by subject and topic, with the words you must remember in bold. Mnemonics have their own list, so you can drill them on the bus.

  • Each note lists its textbook sources
  • Some notes and mnemonics are free to read
Clinical Chemistry
Glucose in the blood

A fasting plasma glucose of 126 mg/dL or higher, confirmed on a second day, meets the cutoff for diabetes mellitus. 100 to 125 mg/dL is impaired fasting glucose.

Only one hormone lowers blood glucose: insulin. Several raise it.

Mnemonic
GECG
Glucagon, Epinephrine, Cortisol, Growth hormone: the hormones that raise glucose.
Methods

Hexokinase is the reference method for glucose. Glucose oxidase is specific for β-D-glucose, so a mutarotase step helps it read total glucose.

Delay in separating cells from serum lowers glucose by about 5 to 7 percent an hour (glycolysis). Sodium fluoride prevents it.

A plan and a streak that keep you going

Set your board exam date, tick the topics from your syllabus, and LabAn spreads them over the days you have left. A day counts toward your streak when you answer at least one question.

Questions you may have

Is LabAn free?

You can start free. The free plan has sample questions in all six subjects, each with an explanation, and you do not need to sign in. Student and Board Pass unlock the full question bank and more. See the plans above.

Do I need internet?

The free sample questions are inside the app, so they work offline. Paid question sets download to your phone once, and after that you can practise and sit mock exams without signal. You need internet to sign in, buy a plan and download.

Where is my progress stored?

On your phone. Your answers, flags, streak and study plan are not sent to us. This also means that if you uninstall the app or clear its data, your progress goes with it. Read the Privacy Policy for the full details.

How do I delete my account?

Open Profile, then Settings, and tap Delete account, or follow the steps on the delete account page. Cancelling a plan is done in Google Play.

Is LabAn connected to the PRC?

No. LabAn is a study aid and is not affiliated with the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). Its questions are original, each checked against a textbook or law, and are not copies of board exam items.

How do I contact you?

Email [email protected] for questions, feedback or to report a mistake in a question.
